World-renown Event Celebrates Health and Competition
The 6th and 7th of July is on the way, and if you’re in Queensland and looking for a fun event to take part in, keep the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in mind.
Gold Coast Airport is celebrating its 11th year as the naming rights sponsor of the marathon. According to the marathon’s site, the event has grown from 11,063 competitors in 2003 to an expected number of more than 30,000 competitors this year.
The marathon began in 1979 when it was simply called the Gold Coast Marathon. The event was the idea of the Rotary Club of Surfers Paradise Central as part of a health awareness campaign for those along the Gold Coast, according to the website. The marathon originally consisted of a six-lap loop course, with the starting and ending point being the Evandale Civic Centre. 2003 marked Gold Coast Airport signing on as the naming-rights sponsor. Also in 2003, a new 7.5 km course was included for ASICS Walk participants.
In 2005, the marathon was named the “Best Major Festival and Event” by the Australian Tourism Awards. In 2007, the event had the largest participation increase throughout the 29-year history of the event. In 2011, the marathon became known as Australia’s fastest marathon course.
There are several types of running events depending on your fitness level, age, or ability. There’s, of course, the titled marathon itself, but other running events include the Southern Cross University 10km Run, the Suncorp Bank 5.7km Challenge, the 2km Junior Dash, the 4km Junior Dash, the ASICS Half Marathon, the Wheelchair Marathon and the Wheelchair 15km. Of course, you can participate to challenge yourself or just for the fun of competition, but you can also run and help make a difference if you decide to run for a cause, such as the event’s official charity, Cancer Council Queensland.
The marathon weekend kicks off the 5th July with the ASICS Sport and Leisure Expo. The expo, to be held at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre, features the latest in sporting, health, and leisure products. The expo will run through the 6th of July.
The Gold Coast Airport Marathon is an exciting event that not only promotes health, but also promotes the spirit of friendly competition.
