Meet Includes Raffle and Live Football Match
The 1st of February started out with a laser focus on football thanks to the Melbourne Rs’ Official Meet. The meet, held at the Turf Bar-Sports Bar & Grill in Melbourne, Victoria, included a raffle featuring prizes such as an adult training t-shirt, a Superhoops 82 t-shirt, and an adult beanie and scarf set.Mark Davis of the football collective QPR Australia discussed the sports event in detail. “The Melbourne Rs Official Meet is a gathering of QPR FC [Queen’s Park Rangers Football Club] supporters from Melbourne that gets together for selected football matches during the English football season,” he said. “Recently we have also been joined by QPR supporters from other Australian states.”
Davis said that all of the promotion for the event was done through social media. “We have a twitter account, @qpr_australia, which has over 400 followers,” he said. “I also post the events on a Facebook group page Hoops Down Under to reach out to QPR fans nationwide.”
QPR organizers in England have also helped promote the Melbourne Rs. “Recently the social media team at QPR in London have shown their support by posting articles about the Melbourne Rs meets on their official website,” said Davis.
With all the online support, it goes without saying that the meet was, as Davis said, “a massive success!” “Over 50 QPR supporters turned up to the Turf Bar,” he said.
The football match itself was “definitely the highlight,” said Davis. “A nail-biting 3-all draw but some thrilling goals scored by both teams. The half time raffle was also well received and people were impressed by the professionalism of the tickets!”
If you’re planning an event similar to the one the Melbourne Rs put on, Davis said to create multiple plans just in case something happens to go wrong. “There’s a fair bit of work involved so make sure you cover all the bases, including back up plans eg. an alternative venue if the original venue happens to fall through,” he said. “Keep the venue owners informed of numbers & keep communications open. Use the power of social media to your advantage & keep your followers informed of any changes.”
