On February 15, 2014, The Randoms hosted a Gala Dinner at the Italian sports Club in Werribee, Victoria. The event was a fundraiser for the group’s primary fundraising recipient, Relay For Life.
Relay For Life is a Cancer Council fundraising program which originally began as a part of the American Cancer Society. America’s Relay for Life began in 1985 when colorectal surgeon Dr. Gordy Klatt ran and walked for a full 24 hours to raise awareness—and money—about cancer. Now , Relay for Life has teams all across the world—in 600 communities across 20 countries. In Australia, Relay for Life began in 1999 when Murrumbeena, a community in Victoria, raised over $75,000 for Cancer Council. Now, Relay for Life takes place in every state and territory and has raised over $14 million a year.
All funds raised through Relay For Life go toward funding clinical trials and research, resources to doctors, training Cancer Council Helpline staff members, providing a newly diagnosed cancer patient with important materials and support, and more.
The Randoms’s Gala event included a live band, dancing, auctions, and the super draw raffle. Tickets for the event were $20 each or $50 for three tickets. There were very generous donors present, and there were over 20 prizes valued between $200-$800. The tickets from the super draw raffle raised $6000. When the event was over, The Randoms had raised $14,000, all of which went to Relay For Life and the Cancer Council Victoria.
The Randoms utilized a few different methods for advertising their event. They used flyers hung up around the local area, word of mouth, email, and Facebook. In all, there were 200 attendees at the Gala. All of that marketing surely paid off, as the event was extremely successful, with 0ver $14,000 raised..
According to Alana Ryan, Team Captain of The Randoms team, the best parts of the event were the super draw raffle and appearances by Caterina Torres from The Voice Australia and Jack Fitzpatrick from the Melbourne Football Club. Everyone danced the night away and raised money for a great cause!
